We know clicking the +1 means “I recommend this” or “this is cool”, but what does it really mean?

Google’s “plus one” button is part of a larger scheme of integrated social recommendations.  This is a BIG deal.  If you notice in the image above and in your live Google search results, Google has placed a “+1″ button next to every link.  If you’re on Google Plus (or have a network associated with your Gmail account), you might notice occasionally some of your contacts show up under the link as Google let’s you know they +1’d it.  See below:

So other than a new popularity contest, what does it mean for you?  If you are part of a larger network or are targeting customers who are socially connected, you need to leverage this new feature.  In its quest for global domination, Google is assigning a little SEO nod to links with more Plus Ones (if those Plus Ones reach the searcher’s social networks).

It’s simple math: the more Plus Ones you have, the more likely one of those will touch a potential click’s network, and thus, the more likely you are to be seen on the first page.

So how do you get in on this?  Users can Plus One a page both from Google’s search page AND from the website, itself, if the Plus One button has been put there.  Here’s how to add the Google Plus One button to your site: Go to http://www.google.com/webmasters/+1/button/ and grab the code.
